Veterans Exemptions

Additional Veterans Exemption Information

The Town of Orange, through the Board of Selectman, recently passed an ordinance that affords a $20,000 assessment exemption to income challenged veterans of a time of war.  The Town of Orange holds the distinction of being the first town in the State of Connecticut to pass such an ordinance in 2004. Since this ordinance requires that you reapply biannually, the Assessor’s Office cordially invites you to file for this benefit to secure your exemption for the October 1, 2017 Grand List. The income limits for this year are:

  • $ 60,200 for single applicants
  • $67,900 for married applicants
  • $18,000 for single applicants excluding social security if 100% disabled by V.A.
  • $21,000 for married applicants excluding social security if 100% disabled by VA

Income includes wages, tips, salaries, interest, dividends, (either taxable or exempt), and gross social security. If you filed or intend to file a 2016 federal income tax return, please submit a copy. If you received social security benefits over the 2016 calendar year, you must submit a copy of your SSA 1099 form. If any applicant is certified as 100 % disabled by the Veterans Administration, social security is excluded for the income reporting requirements.  Income requirements are set by section 12-81l of the Connecticut General Statutes. Please apply prior to September 30, 2017

In addition to the town sponsored program, the State of Connecticut affords income challenged veterans and surviving spouses of veterans the option of doubling their existing state veteran’s exemptions. This program is in addition to the local Town of Orange program.  Application forms and criteria for this State sponsored program are available at the Assessor’s Office and are as follows

  • $35,200 for single applicants
  • $42,900 for married applicants
  • $18,000 for single applicants excluding social security if 100% disabled by V.A.
  • $21,000 for married applicants excluding social security if 100% disabled by VA

Income requirements are set by section 12-81l of the Connecticut General Statutes. As always, if you have any questions or difficulties filling out the forms, the Assessor’s Office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30pm.  You can reach us by dialing 891-4700 extension 4723.
If you wish to apply for the above mentioned programs see Form M59A and Form 12-81f in the document center.
If you are an active service veteran, you are entitled to a full exemption on one motor vehicle. Please see Form 12-81(53) in the document center.
